Ian goes above and beyond

A teacher who goes above and beyond was the recipient of this year’s Pride of South Holland Award for Special Achievement.

Ian Billinghurst was nominated by fellow staff at Spalding Academy for the support he gives both pupils and fellow staff.

Ian was nominated by the school’s Amanda Halifax.

“He is the most dedicated and compassionate member of staff that I have ever known,” she said. “He always supports every student to achieve their best and makes every student feel valued and respected.

“Ian is very approachable and knows every student in school. They know he genuinely cares and he always makes time to speak and resolve any problems that they might have.

“He is the first in school in the morning and the last in the evening and creates a happy and safe environment.

“When I had COVID Ian was on the phone right away asking if I needed anything and he does this for all staff.

“He genuinely cares about everyone and he becomes more than a work colleague and a friend to all.”

Ian received his award from celebrity guest Simon Weston and award sponsor Springfields Shopping Outlet retail director Simon Stone at the awards ceremony.

“It was a bit embarrassing really as I’m just doing my job which I’m quite privileged to do in the first place,” Ian said. “It was also quite humbling and nice to have these compliments about the job you’re doing.

“All I’m trying to do is my best helping young people achieve as much as they can.”

The 40-year-old has been a teacher at Neville Avenue for 14 years, initially as a PE teacher at the Gleed School as it was known then.

He’s been a head of year, pastoral lead and is now the assistant head.

“It’s just a great job,” Ian said. “Every day is different.

“It’s really nice knowing the young people and being able to help them.”

Brett Sinclair, deputy headteacher, said: “Ian has been pivotal in the huge success story that is Spalding Academy.

“He has worked tirelessly to support all stakeholders and has demonstrated through the recent years a fantastic drive and enthusiasm to not only deliver for our young people the best learning environment but also in offering a service that goes above and beyond when our young people have needed that extra care and provision.

“Ian has become very much part of the fabric of Spalding Academy and will always champion the school and students whilst ensuring that high standards are maintained.

“He is a very worthy winner of a Pride Award.”
