Homes, allotments, cemetery and woodland burial plans

Up to 45 homes, allotments and a new cemetery, including woodland burial plots, could be built in Crowland.

The plans have been put forward by Crowland Parish Council, which hopes a developer will come forward to take on the project.

As part of the plan, the council intends to maintain control of around ten of the proposed new homes.

They would be offered for rent to people already living in the village who wish to downsize from, and free up, family-sized homes but remain in Crowland.

It is also hoped the new homes would help meet a shortfall of housing within South Holland in the next five years.

Outline planning permission is being sought from South Holland District Council for the development on land off James Road.

A design and access statement included in the planning application states: “It is anticipated that an agreement with a suitable developer will result in the new allotments and cemetery being provided as part of the housing development.”

As seen in the impression (above), the existing allotments would make way for the homes, while a new site would be found for an increased number of allotments, which would also boast toilets, storage facilities and car parking, all of which are lacking with the current location.

A new cemetery would also be included to provide burial plots when the existing one becomes full, probably within the next five to ten years.

For those looking for a woodland burial, plots could be provided within two deciduous copses that have been planted by the parish council.

Two new access points would be provided to the new development, which lies either side of James Road and is next to Snowden Field, which provides public open space for sports and recreation.

On the far side of Snowden Field lies Crowland Abbey.
