Home joy for Surfleet in Beginner A League

Spalding Hockey Club hosted the Spalding Primary Schools Hockey Tournament Four at Glen Park, Surfleet, with 20 teams from 13 primary schools participating.
Many of the 150-plus youngsters were making their first appearance for their schools.
Teams were split into four graded leagues and in the Advanced League, Monks House A carried on where they left off in tournament three. Although they were held to a goalless draw in their opening game by Eye Primary, the well-organised Monks House team went on to top the table with wins over John Harrox A (1-0), Ayscoughfee A (3-1) and Boston’s Tower Road A (3-0).
Boston-based St Thomas’ took the honours in the Intermediate League, winning all four of their games without conceding a goal. They opened brightly with a 3-0 win over St John’s and went on to record victories against Tower Road B
(1-0), Monks House B (2-0) and St John’s (2-0). Tower Road demonstrated their strength in depth as their B team bounced back after the opening defeat to beat Monks House B (2-0), St John’s (2-0) and Gosberton Risegate (4-0) to finish second.
The Beginner A League was close with Surfleet Primary scoring with the final touch of the last game to beat Spalding Parish 2-1 and pinch the title. The Surfleet team were held to a goalless draw by St Norbert’s in their opening game and were then beaten 2-0 by Eye Primary B before bouncing back to beat Pinchbeck East 2-0 and Spalding Parish to the delight of the home crowd.
Gosberton Academy A won all their four games without conceding a goal in the Beginner B League to take the top spot. They opened with a 2-0 win against John Harrox B before going on to record wins over John Harrox B (1-0), Tower Road C (1-0), and Ayscoughfee B (2-0).
There was nothing to split Gosberton Academy B and Tower Road C as they both ended with identical records in points, goal difference and goals scored. A goalless draw in the match between them meant they shared second place.
The tournament finals are due to take place at Glen Park on Friday, May 5.
