Holy smoke – fire halts service

A church celebrating its 800th anniversary this year had to suspend a service on Sunday after smoke was seen pouring from the organ.

All Saints’ Church in Holbeach had to be evacuated after the first hymn, the Rev Sherine Angus said.
“The service had just started.
“It didn’t get to the point of being a fire thankfully, although there was a lot a smoke and the fire brigade ensured it did not develop further.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “It was reported to us at 10.38am on Sunday morning and was attended by crews from Long Sutton and Spalding.
“It resulted in light fire damage to an electric motor of a church organ and the fire was out on arrival of the crews.”
All Saints’ is putting on a host of events this year.
It includes the Stain It, Stamp It, Stitch It leatherwork class being hosted this Saturday (March 15).
The three-hour class starts at 10am and costs £20.
Bookings can be made by calling Carole Warner on 07778 545454.
