Seb Hayes has talked up the attitude of new Holbeach United signing Zak Munton after prising him away from hometown club Bourne Town.
The prolific young gun, who is the son of Wakes legend Darren Munton, became Hayes’ second signing as Tigers boss earlier this week.
Having notched 11 goals in 22 games for UCL Division One Bourne this season, Munton junior could have been forgiven for staying in his comfort zone at the Abbey Lawn.
But when Hayes, who has monitored his progress for years, offered him the opportunity to step up to the Premier Division, the new Tigers chief was delighted with his response.
“Zak was hungry to join us,” said Hayes. “I was very impressed with him.
“Some players don’t like stepping out of their comfort zone. But Zak told me that he had to do just that – and felt that he was ready for the challenge.
“He’s obviously a top talent and I’m hoping he’ll be able to learn from Josh Ford and Tommy Treacher, who are vastly experienced at this level.”
Munton goes straight into the Holbeach squad for Saturday’s clash with Leicester Nirvana (3pm). Matt Warfield could also return for the Tigers at Carter’s Park, with Hayes keen to improve on the Tigers’ dismal recent home form in his first game in the home dugout.
The Tigers beat Rothwell 2-1 in their last home game, but hadn’t previously won in front of their own fans since October 15.
Hayes knows that it won’t be easy against a Nirvana side bossed by his old friend Scott Goodwin, who he worked with at Norwich City earlier in his career.
“Scott is a very good coach,” added Hayes. “He’ll certainly make them hard to beat on Saturday.
“They’ll be well organised and we’ll need to play like we did last weekend (4-0 win at ON Chenecks – page 28).
“I’m not getting carried away with that result. If we win a few on the bounce then perhaps I’ll read more into it. We’ve been poor at home, so hopefully that’ll improve on Saturday.”
Holbeach also visit Deeping on Tuesday night.
