Pupils’ scientific explorations and culinary creations earned than second place in the Lincolnshire Schools Challenge.
The Year 6 youngsters at Holbeach Primary School spent months planting, caring for, studying, dissecting, examining and cooking potatoes to determine the results of a high nitrogen fertiliser on potato yields.
They also developed a gluten free chocolate muffin for coeliacs.
The school also impressed the judges by working with other organisations, such as the National Centre for Food Manufacture, Tesco head office and Coveris Labels based in Wisbech.
Teaching assistant Carole Kenyon said: “The competition has offered endless ways of enhancing the children’s education.
“They had great fun and the experience has left a lasting impression on the children as they came to understand the effort that goes into growing and producing our food.”
