Historic aircraft descend on area

Classic aircraft came from across the country to take to South Holland skies earlier this month.

Fenland Aero Club hosted the Vintage Piper Club of Great Britain at its Holbeach St Johns base.

The club’s Alistair Goodrum said: “Over 50 assorted and colourful light aircraft flew in to the airfield from all over the country.

“With early arrivals landing under high, patchy grey cloud, the sun gradually came through and with a warm, light wind favouring the main runway, sightseers had an excellent view of the aeroplanes from the clubhouse enclosure.

“A full aircraft park overflowed alongside the enclosure, giving spectators a splendid free show that was further enhanced by an unscheduled flypast of the B-17 Flying Fortress ‘Sally B’ and a formation of four tiny Druine aircraft of the Tiger Club’s Turbulent Display Team, both en route to an air display at East Kirkby.

“The next public event in the Fenland Aero Club calendar will be the Wings and Wheels Day on Sunday, August 24.
