Herd and Cobb both enjoy weekend wins at Welland Yacht Club

Clive Herd and Brian Cobb both bagged wins at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday – but it was tough going for all on a day with limited wind assistance for the competitors.

The first event of the day was race five in the Sunday Points series, with a total of nine boats taking to the water amid hardly any breeze.

The going was slow and two boats retired, but the highlight was a sibling rivalry between the Willerton sisters Rosie and Freya as they switched positions several time on the final leg.

However, it was Cobb who was first home – followed by Paul Burton, Herd, Lucy Burton, Freya Willerton, Rosie Willerton, Samuel Willerton, Christopher Seaborn and Joseph Seaborn.

Other than Joseph Seaborn moving up to seventh once handicaps applied, the result on the water remained the same.

The breeze picked up for the afternoon’s two races in the Personal Handicap series.

The first of them saw six boats taking to the start, with Herd making it first across the line this time with enough of a lead to maintain the win under handicap.

Cobb had to settle for second this time, with Wilson third, Lucy Burton fourth, Paul Burton fifth and Freya Willerton sixth.

Only three boats remained for the final race of the day, but it was the top three from the previous outing.

However, there was no change to the order – with Herd again taking the win from Cobb in second and Wilson back third.
