Harrox beaten for first time in top-of-table clash

The top-of-the-table clash in the South Lincs Border League Championship went against leaders Moulton Harrox as their winning start to the season was ended by Newborough.

Matt Rose lost the toss and was asked to bat. With a reshuffle at the top of the order, Lewis Martin opened alongside Ruari Drumm. Martin started his innings with a fizz, reaching double figures before being trapped in front. Drumm followed shortly after for five, bringing the promoted Flynn McMillan to the crease at no.3 in the absence of Josh Newton.

McMillan carved out 17, with Rose scrambling from the other end for a run-a-ball 20 but wickets fell regularly.

A late burst from Curtis Todd, who struck a spirited 17, pushed Harrox to a competitive but under par 138 all out.

Harry Lovell struck early as Newborough were reduced to 41/3. A composed partnership between David Cooper and Tom Shipman put the visitors in control before Rose (4-38) roared back into the contest with a four-wicket spell from his medium pace, turning the game on its head at 117/7.

Lovell (4-38) added another scalp to leave Newborough 136/8 but cool heads and patient batting eventually saw them edge over the line to win by two wickets on 139/8.

Moulton Seconds made the trip to Orton Park, who opted to bat first.

Dylan Stutkins struck early, claiming two quick wickets to give Harrox a bright start. A rebuilding partnership of 57 followed before Pradeep Indika broke through and went on to deliver a superb spell of 3-33. Zak Maddison removed the Orton captain but the hosts counter-attacked effectively, with two batters passing 50 in fluent fashion. Stutkins returned to finish with 3-34, while Oliver Despicht chipped in with one, as Orton closed on a daunting 269/8.

Chasing the target, Moulton started with promise. Charlie Poulter continued his good form with a classy 19 and Maddison impressing with a fluent 28.

However, wickets fell at regular intervals and momentum was hard to build. Rob Callaby stood firm with an unbeaten 16 but the innings closed on 119 all out.

The weekend’s one win came without a ball bowled thanks to Ramsey conceding their Rutland Sunday League Division Four East match.
