A good night for struggling sides on Spalding snooker scene

Lowly Holbeach C made a nonsense of the Division One table in Spalding and District Snooker League by almost wiping the floor with Whittlesey A.

Only a terrific 22 clearance by Terry Everitt prevented Holbeach C from taking all six points last Thursday.

Everitt edged out Mark Gregory on the black ball, but wins for Nigel Ward, Nick Edwards, and Dan and Paul Ashton gave the Holbeach side – who are one-from-bottom of the table – a timely boost.

Services E also gave their league position a much-needed fillip, grabbing a 5-1 win at home to Pyramid B.

Vince Fitter (O14) got the ball rolling with a 90-21 defeat of Spencer Dawkins (O49) and Chris Dunmore put the Spalding side 2-0 by seeing off Alfonso Palumbo on the black ball.

Phil and Martin Spencer were Services’ other winners, Dave Pearson managing a 33 break as he earned Pyramid’s solitary point.

Meanwhile, Neil Reynolds followed up a 45 break with a 25 clearance as Donington C maintained their interest in the league title.

The third-placed side returned from Holbeach A with four points. It could have been better but for the home team’s Bobby White sinking the black to beat Graham Slater.

In Division Two, it was a frustrating night for bottom side Services B.

They did their best to close the seven-point gap on Consti H with a 4-2 win – but then learned that their quarry had gone one better by returning from Crowland A with five points.

In Services’ match with fellow strugglers Gosberton A, two games were settled on the black ball – Jeff Collins for the Spalding side and Carl Wand for the visitors.

Peter Waterfall (R14) was Gosberton’s other winner, comfortably beating Paul Doades 68-31.

Over at Crowland, Seb Grimston was Consti H’s only loser. Doug Garfoot, Mark German, John Houldershaw and Jason Houghton edged the side further away from the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Boundary kept among the tight pack of clubs towards the top with a 4-2 win over Gosberton B.

Shaun Harvey (on the black) and Sam Craft earned Gosberton’s two points.

Consti I were another club at the wrong end of the table to pull off a decent result.

Yet it didn’t look like it would be their night when Stewart Wells lost to Crowland B’s Derek Tinkler on the black ball in the opening game and then Peter Stokes was well beaten by Paul Spicer. However, John Bellerby, David Twelves and Richard Geddes made it 4-2 to Consti I.

The other second division strugglers to grab a win were Long Sutton D, sending Services C packing with a 4-2 defeat.

Gosberton D endorsed their Division Three title credentials in good fashion.

It was top versus second place last week and Whittlesey C suffered a resounding 5-1 loss, with no tight games.

Mid-table Gosberton C were a player short at home to Consti J but still managed to win. Malc Dennis – who was level handicap with Nev Vickers – was the only loser for the foursome (55-13).
