Golf round-up: Captain’s team take Ryder Cup spoils at Tydd St Giles

Tydd St Giles Golf and Country Club recently hosted its first-ever captain versus management Ryder Cup Competition – and it was a real thriller.

Played amid adverse weather conditions, the first session ended with the captain’s team taking a 5-4 lead.

The singles saw a couple of big wins for the management through Luke Rowell (9&8) and Daniel Newell (8&6), but they lost the session 9.5-8.5 to give the captain a 14.5-12.5 win.

Seniors’ section: Stableford Trophy: Division One – 1st Brian Newby 38pts; 2nd Gerry Sherriff 37pts; 3rd Noel Bratt 36pts.

Division Two – 1st Dave Morris 40pts; 2nd Ken Walker 38pts (ocb); 3rd Russell Doy 38pts.

Division Three – 1st Geoff Chappell 37pts; 2nd Trevor Hunt 35 points, 3rd Derek Sharman 33pts.

Men’s section: Gold Medal final – 1st Phil Tilney 67; 2nd Andy Sleath 72; 3rd Gino Ciuffini 73.

  • Rob Newns took top spot at Gedney Hill Golf Club’s Greenkeepers Open with a fine haul of 41 points.

He edged out Craig Johnson (40 points) in the men’s section event.

Men’s section results: Greenkeepers Open – 1st Rob Newns 41pts; 2nd Craig Johnson 40pts; 3rd Pete Vinter 39pts.

October Medal – 1st Keith Lawrence 66 (ocb); 2nd Paul Purcell 66; 3rd Steve Horton 66.

Famous Grouse Foursomes – 1st Joe Timms & Andy Davies 44pts; 2nd John Venters & Pete Vinter 39pts; 3rd Steve Steels & Graham Pollard 36pts.

Britton Cup Pairs – 1st Matt Dolby & Andy Davies 47pts; 2nd Adam Britton & Paul Purcell 43pts; 3rd Merv Davies & Pete Vinter 38pts.

  • Ralph Harding scored an amazing hole-in-one at Sutton Bridge Golf Club over the weekend.

The 87-year-old aced the second hole – and 110-yard par three – while playing with fellow members Andy Parks and Ken Greene.
