Golf round-up: Brilliant Brown bags Past Captain’s title at Spalding Golf Club

Paula Brown was the winner of Spalding Golf Club’s ladies’ Past Captain’s Day event after a dazzling display.

A total of 12 former ladies’ skippers took part in the 13-hole Stableford event at the Surfleet course, on what was a very windy day.

But nobody could stop Brown, who ran away with the win with a brilliant 28 points.

The game was followed by a meal attended by 19 past ladies captains, a great turnout.

This year’s competition marked the 30th year of this event, started originally by Hazel Peck, and it has been a success every year since.

  • Ten sets of pairs contested this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes event at the Surfleet course.

Just 0.5 separated the top three teams, with Lloyd Chatham and Richard McCrae the winners on 72.0.

Spencer Gooderson and Calum Lewis took second from Stuart Parker and Wayne Wallace on countback after both scored 72.5.

  • Gill Dewhurst saw off 26 other lady members of Spalding Golf Club to win the October Medal last Wednesday.

In what was an incredibly tight competition at the Surfleet course, her score of 73 was enough to take top spot on countback.

Unfortunate to be in second was Nicola Weller, who also carded a 73, while Jacquie Walton was third on 74.

  • Some 33 ladies entered the first round of Spalding’s Groom Shield.

This bogey competition is played over three rounds, leading up to a final between the top two scorers in round three.

The winner of this round, on countback, was Mo Wallace with a 0 score.

Second went to Nicola Weller, also on 0, while third equal – also on countback – were Margaret Barkway and Anita Cross with -1.

The top 75 per cent go through to the next round.

  • Far from ideal conditions awaited the 34 ladies who contested Spalding’s Vilma Radcliffe Stableford competition at the Surfleet course.

Barbara Newcombe took the victory on 33 points, pipping Paula Brown on countback.

Angela Roper was just behind those two in third place on 32 points.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club
