Gail grabs glory by seeing off 11 others at Welland Yacht Club’s latest Frostbite outing

Gail Follington was the winner at the second round of Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series on Sunday.

A slight breeze greeted the contestants this week and, although the sun was shining, there was signs of ice on some of the boats.

Some 12 boats took to the starting line, with members of neighbouring Witham Sailing Club also joining Welland’s regulars.

From the start, the faster boats of Alan Cox and Roger Ackroyd (RS200) and the Scorpion of Andy Prior and Tom Bell soon started to pull out a lead.

As the fleet headed towards the top mark, Follington had managed to be the lead laser and positioned her boat to give her right of way on rounding the mark over Paul and Lucy Burton.

TOP SPOT: Gail Follington was Sunday’s winner.

As the boats made their way back to the club house, Ivan Hurst had worked his way up to fourth on the water.

Among the Toppers, Emma Agar had the lead over Chris Seaborn, Andy Dobson, Katie Follington and the Willerton twins Samuel and Freya.

Prior and Bell managed to take the lead at the bottom mark when Cox and Ackroyd started to round the mark the wrong way and had to re-round it correctly.

Positions remained the same as they headed for the top mark for the second time, with Alistair Mitchell picking up two places on the run back down to the club house by managing one less tack than the boats ahead of him on the up wind section.

With only six seconds between the top two once handicaps were applied, Gail Follington took the win from the Burtons, with Hurst third and Mitchell fourth.
