Friendly ends in whitewash

Nottingham University 30 Spalding RFC 0

Spalding’s woes with injuries, sickness, work commitments etc continued on Saturday with nearly half the first team players not available.

After consultation with the league secretary and the Director of Rugby at Nottingham University it was decided that it would not be safe to play a competitive league game, taking a combined Spalding Firsts and Seconds team to Nottingham, therefore Spalding conceded the game but travelled to Nottingham for a friendly.

Within a couple of minutes the students, with their running game and far superior fitness levels, had two tries on the scoreboard and continued their fast, furious running and passing game throughout.

Running out easy winners, the students celebrated being league champions winning by four points over Market Rasen and Louth, whilst Spalding end in a creditable fifth place having been in the chasing pack for most of the season.

The University informed Spalding’s director of rugby, Tom Duce, that their hardest game had been the trip to Spalding at the very start of the season when only a late couple of tries had secured their victory.

Team: Tom Parker, Elliot Humphrey, Connor Broome, Aaron Brundle, Ryan Firth, Jack Grundy, Ben Shields, Willis Ingleby, Ben Bettinson, Ollie Sorrell, Ollie Machin, Bailey Hudson, Gav Sharman. Subs: Chris Wilson, Ryan Medlock.
