Fish shop charity cash theft is a ‘kick in guts’

NAMES: Bill Rai of Oh My Cod, Spalding. Charity money and takings were stolenOwners of a fish and chip shop say the theft of money they had raised for charity is a “kick in the guts”.

Sandy and Bill Rai had the cash in a pot at their Oh My Cod premises in Alexander Road, Spalding, when it was broken into last week.

As well as the money, which was destined for cancer research, a handful of loose change was also stolen and the shop was ransacked.

Sandy said: “We had locked up as normal on Monday night but on Tuesday morning someone had broken in through a window at the back.

“There was glass everywhere and they had just thrown everything all over.

“They had thrown carrier bags and curry sauce powder on the floor – in total the damage cost about £400 to repair but it’s not just the cost, it’s also the inconvenience.

“They even threw the till on the floor to smash into it, but it was empty as we never leave cash in the premises.

“I don’t understand why they would break into a fish and chip shop – it’s not like we have cigarettes or alcohol in there that are high value items they can sell on.”

Sandy and Bill have raised the undisclosed amount by collecting from customers and digging into their own pockets.

They are now thinking about holding an event to raise more money.

Sandy said: “For someone to steal money meant for charity is a real kick in the guts, so we want to do something to raise that amount again so the charity doesn’t miss out.”
