A celebration to mark the centenary of Carter’s Park being open to the public will be the main event in Holbeach this year.
It was revealed at a meeting of Holbeach Parish Council as part of an as yet unannounced programme of events.
There had been some arguments about when the park was opened, but the meeting heard the authority had found newspaper cuttings relating to its opening to the public on May 17, 1924.
Chair of the PR committee Tim Wiltshire said: “We do not enjoy a positive view from the public but our events are very well received and attended.
“The public enjoy these events and appreciate the lengths we go to and, for the first time, are happy to support us as volunteers now.
“The public sees value in these events where it does not seek value in many of our other responsibilities. We need to capitalise on this.
“We’ve a fantastic programme of events throughout the year.
“I now have an excellent team on events and I’m proud of the commitment shown by each and every one of them and the incredible days they come up with.
“2024 is going to be a red letter year for Holbeach culturally on which we’ll build on firm foundations to create something that is truly unique.
“Holbeach is set to be a destination culturally which can only impact positively on the town and the surrounding parish.”
The date and nature of the Carter’s Park centenary celebrations are yet to be finalised.
Coun Wiltshire said that it would come under the council’s ‘Destination Holbeach’ initiative.
“Holbeach is not just a dormitory town for Spalding, we have a vibe of our own, and are determined to demonstrate that we can mix it with the big boys,” he said following the meeting.
