Drohans are on form in Mallards’ surprise success

Long Sutton Mallards were the only one of the club’s three teams to record a victory at the weekend but it came in style.

They beat second-placed Bircham by four wickets after bowling out their visitors for just 73 in their Mid-Norfolk Sunday League Kevin Grimmer Division encounter.

Albi Drohan (4-11) completed the rout after Thilina Dilsham (3-18), Steven Milnes (2-22) and Faz Mukhtar (1-21) had enjoyed earlier success.

Alastair Drohan was the home hero in the response, cracking a run-a-ball 50 of their 74/6 with no other batsman passing six runs.

Things are looking tight at the foot of the South Lincs Border League Championship, where a six-wicket defeat at Woodhall Spa leaves Sutton’s Saturday first team only three points ahead of the drop zone, albeit with a crucial game in hand.

After being asked to bat, Sutton lost their first four batsmen for a combined 25 runs but Daniel Oldfield (41) steadied things, with Daniel Plant (28no) and captain Josh Baker (21) boosting the middle order.

It left the visitors all out on 160 in the 37th over. However the home side were in a hurry to get things completed and rattled off 163 for the loss of four wickets in the 25th over.

In Division One, Sutton seconds won the toss at Heckington. They asked their hosts to bat first and they amassed 247, with Sutton all out for 161 in their innings.
