Downing Street treat for Holbeach fundraiser Les (71)

A tireless fundraiser has been nominated for a special behind-the-scenes visit to 10 Downing Street as a thank you for his efforts.

Les Ward, who celebrated his 71st birthday on Thursday (October 8), has raised more than £50,000 since 1997 when he first began collecting cash for Holbeach Town Band.

Since then several good causes have benefited from his efforts, which have seen him organise bingo nights and table top sales, where he sells bric-a-brac donated to him by local charity shops.

Beneficiaries of Mr Ward’s fundraising include Holbeach’s WI hall, the Air Training Corps, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes nominated Mr Ward, of Holbeach, for the special trip to the Prime Minister’s home and he is due to travel to London, as part of a 17-strong group.

Mr Ward said: “I have never been to Downing Street before and I am really looking forward to the day out.
“I am sure it will be very interesting and it’s very nice to be invited by John Hayes in recognition of the work I have done in fundraising over the years.
“I am looking forward to taking lots of photos, although I believe some areas will be out of bounds.”

Mr Ward is now hoping to rise to the challenge of resurrecting a full Christmas market in Holbeach, including street stalls, live music and entertainment, and is keen to hear from anyone willing to get involved.
Anyone interested can contact Mr Ward on 01406 425947.
