Donington off to a winning start with champion effort

Reigning Spalding & District Snooker League champions Donington C got off to a winning start in their title defence with a 4-2 success against Consti H.

Neil Reynolds (O63) chalked up 33 and 22 breaks in his 85-36 win against Seb Grimston (O28), with Adam Mayman (O28) the pick of the visitors with a 29 break in his
54-64 reversal against Lee Hempsall (O14).
Donington won the first three frames, with Shaun Pickering (R14) completing the trio. Jon Holdershaw (R14) and Doug Garfoot (O21) ensured it was not all one-way traffic to narrow the gap.
Holbeach C are the first week leaders, courtesy of a 6-0 derby success at clubmates Holbeach B, albeit Barry Haynes (O7) for the home team was the only one to score a decent break, hitting 22 in his 60-36 defeat to Dan Ashton (O7).
Nick Edwards (R14), Terry West (R7), Mark Gregory (O28) and Paul Ashton (R14) were the other winners. The latter successfully negotiated a black ball game to see off Neil Harvey (O21) 66-62.
Division Two champions Pyramid A marked their return to the top level with a 5-1 victory over Pyramid D. A re-spotted black was needed to decide the opening frame, with Victor Rouse (scr) just getting the better of Pete Sharpe-Grose (scr) 44-37.
Norman Vaughan (O21) made it 2-0 before Reegan Cooke-Holmes fired in breaks of 20 and 21 on his way to an 80-43 win to pull one back. John Twell (O14) and Dean Cole (O21) completed things for the hosts.
Also completing a nap-hand of wins were Consti E, 5-1 against Holbeach D. Thomas Horspool’s (O35)
90-46 success included a break of 24 and a 22 clearance before Simon Law (scr) made it 2-0 with a
69-57 win.
Wayne Forbelets (O21) hit a 32 break in his 79-41 win to pull one back but that was the only success for the visitors. Jack Chilvers (O21) was dominant with breaks of 41 and 30 in an 87-26 success and Martin Ulyatt (O14) completed things with a 67-37 black ball victory over Don Monk (O14).
A fistful of wins was also racked up by Pyramid C, seeing off Services C 5-1 but with three of the frames going to the black ball.
Vince Fitter (O42) opened the scoring for Services with a 64-56 win but Jason Green (O56) hit back with a 97-82 victory, including a 30 break.
Then things got even closer as George Neary-Phillips (O21) shaded Kev Fitter (O14) 54-42, Dave Pearson (O7) pipped Jordan Philpott (R7) 45-44 and Spencer Dawkins (O56) shot a 26 break on his way to overcoming Nigel Cherry (scr) 68-67.
The evening’s other match brought a 4-2 win for Bourne SC A at Consti G. Mark Gray (O98) opened with a 106-86 win, including breaks of 50 and 23. A black ball game went in favour of Joe Garland (O7) 71-65 to level things with Ian Clare (scr) restoring the visitors’ lead with a 88-41 win and Pete Hodgson-Kerry (O28) confirming victory with a 70-19 success.
Another black ball game went in favour of home player Mark Wilkinson (O14) 68-64 to complete matters.
Consti F enjoyed a maximum opening night win in Division Two, seeing off Consti I 6-0 thanks to wins from Darren Stanley (R28)
75-53, Robert Adams (O7) 50-25, Martyn Stanley (R14) 56-33, Bryan Turnell (R14)
60-40 and Justyn Stanley (O7) 68-64.
Division Three champions Holbeach F announced their arrival in the higher level with a 5-1 swamping of Holbeach E. David Lefley (R14) got the better of Robert Coaten (R7) in a 60-53 black ball win but Richard Parkes (scr) hit back to see off Susan Lefley (R21) 52-31.
However, it was all one-way traffic after that with successes for James Quinton (scr) 52-39, Dan Mayfield (O28) 88-50 and Alex Bourne (O21) 43-34.
An inter-club clash at Services went in favour of the B team, who beat the D team 5-1. Chris Dunmore (O35) opened with a 69-42 win and Jason Rose (O28) shot a 23 break in a 97-55 success before Fred Cummins (R14) just got the better of Ian Smith (scr) 61-53 in a black ball game. Jeff Collins (R14) made it four before Russ Morse (scr) pulled one back 50-20.
Consti B enjoyed a 4-2 victory at Holbeach A in a nip and tuck game, settled by Stuart Davis’ (O14) last frame 89-7 win in which he hit a break of 37. Pete Ransome (O28) put the home side ahead with a 76-38 win, John Christian (scr) levelled with a 57-46 black ball game going in his favour, only for Wayne Dent (O49) to restore the home advantage
88-28. Another black ball game went to Martin Fear (O7) 68-56 to make it 2-2, setting things up nicely for Davis.
Gosberton A also enjoyed a winning start to the season on their travels, overcoming Pyramid E 4-2 thanks to wins from Andy Adair (R14) 63-44, Carl Wand (scr) 55-48) and Jamie Mumby (O21) 64-23, who hit a 28 break. Jeremy Radford (R7) 54-52 and John Clapton (R7) 44-37 were the home winners.
Gosberton D are back in Division Three after a single-season spell in Division Two but enjoyed a first-day win, seeing off hosts Boundary B 4-2 with Paulo Gensiorskys (scr) holding his nerve to win the decider 71-50.
Donington B were the opening night’s biggest winners, triumphing 6-0 at Gosberton B thanks to the efforts of Gav Lewis (O7)
77-46, Pete Burrell (scr) 84-56, Paul Stewart (R7) 57-47, Mick Clark (R14) 51-36 and Darren Templeman (scr)
52-40. Burrell hit a 22 break.
Consti A also had a solid opener, winning 5-1 against Whittlesey A, with Jason Clarke (O7) providing the only away win, 72-40 in the second frame.
Sam Roberts (R14) 61-51, Wayne Wilding (O14) 47-8, Bill Prosser (O14) 68-57 and Nigel Steadman (scr) 27-25 were the home victors.
The other three matches all finished 4-2.
Consti C beat Pyramid B thanks to Dave Bannister (O7) 67-55, Mark Craig (R21) 59-29 and Steve Crane (R7) 65-52. Darren Hibbins (scr) 59-51 and Roy Jackson (R14) 64-23 won the first and last frames respectively for the opposition.
Gosberton C went down at home to Donington D after conceding the first two frames to Paul White (R14)
57-37 and Michella George (R28) 82-66 before Mark Payne (O14) pulled one back 69-56. Dan Sawdy (scr) made sure of victory 51-36 before Stuart Henderson (O7) lifted the hosts with a 57-48 verdict.
Whittlesey B were victors against Consti D, despite losing the first frame on the black ball to Martin Perkins (O21) 74-60.
Kay Skutela (R28) 88-64 and John Skutela (scr)
66-38 put the home side ahead, only for Geoff Ellingworth (R21) to level matters 84-46. It was left to Pawel Skutela (R7) to win the decider 68-37, including a 21 break.
