Donington drink-driver collected after crashing car

A labourer from Donington has been banned from driving after crashing on the way home from a pub.

Michael John Hatcher (42) had drunk four pints of San Miguel lager before he ditched a car in Main Road, Quadring, at about 11.30pm on November 23 last year.

Prosecuting at Boston Magistrates’ Court today, Nick Todd said Hatcher and the defendant’s cousin were seen by witnesses to get out of the Ford and be taken away from the scene in another car.

Police were told that the vehicle had been followed by a witness to Hatcher’s home in Malting Lane.

Mr Todd said officers attended and Hatcher claimed he’d drunk three-quarters of a pint of Bailey’s Irish Cream since arriving home.

“He has been charged with driving while unfit because from the forensic scientist’s report it’s likely that Mr Hatcher had something to drink after he got home but he would still have been over the limit,” said Mr Todd.

Hatcher pleaded guilty to driving whilst unfit through drink.

Mitigating, Tony Davis said Hatcher accepted that four pints would have put him over the limit. The loss of his driving licence would mean he’d lose his job.

Hatcher was disqualified from driving for 15 months, which can be reduced with successful completion of a drink-driver rehabilitation course. He was also fined £500 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £50 victim surcharge.
