Spalding Lightning progressed in both the Denny Cup and Yetton Trophy on Saturday.
Spalding won the Denny Cup in 2022 and faced Stamford in this year’s first round opposition. Stamford won the early exchanges, taking a narrow two-shot lead at five ends. The match was still in the balance at the halfway stage as the scores were level at 10 ends.
However, Lightning showed their class in the second half as they led 59-49 at 15 ends, which was extended to 77-56 at 18 ends before Stamford conceded with the scores at 95-58.
Lightning won on three out of the four rinks but the main damage was done by the home rink, skipped by Jordan Philpott, with Kevin Ekins, Ollie Jeapes and Simon Lilley, who had an impressive 35-10 win. Making this rink win even more impressive was that they scored 20 shots without reply over the last six ends. Next up in the second round are Grantham, on Saturday, November 4.

Sleaford were beaten in the Yetton Trophy. In a similar fashion to the men in the Denny Cup, the match was still in the balance at the halfway stage and the teams were level at five ends before Spalding took a 39-32 lead at 10 ends. The lead was extended to 69-42 at 15 ends. Sleaford showed their battling qualities to claw back slightly to 79-58 at 18 ends before Lightning eventually won by 10 shots, 84-74.
Next up in the second round are Charnwood or Melton on Saturday, November 4.

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club enjoyed a friendly at home to Peterborough on Saturday. After nine ends, the hosts led by 20 shots, which increased throughout the match, resulting in a 134-70 win. Spalding had another good win in the Trudy Bates at home to Stamford on Thursday.
Spalding made a slow start but the ladies stepped up a gear to take the lead on aggregate and won on three out of the four rinks.
The top winning rink was skipped by Betty Deaton, with Ann Newbury, Michelle Billingsley and Petrine Ault, who won 30-10.
Spalding’s next fixture in the Trudy Bates will be at Grantham on Thursday, November 23.
