Dennis led the thanks to key workers for final Thursday

A partially sighted 75-year-old said thank you to the staff that helped him back to health from COVID-19 among the final Clap for Carers held last week.

Dennis Pearson joined a host of businesses at Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital last Thursday for the event.

For ten weeks, the country has stood on their doorsteps together at 8pm on Thursdays to applaud and make noise for key workers.

But the organiser Annemarie Plas has called for it to end now the peak of the coronavirus has seemingly passed while hoping its legacy will be a pay rise for key workers.

The 8pm claps have certainly been a hit in South Holland.

Emma Stanley has seen her young ones Cam (6) and Keiry (4) taking part.

“They loved taking part and are really going to miss it,” she said. “Normally they bash their baking trays with wooden spoons in their pyjamas, but they wanted to dress up for the last one.

“They have been keeping the whole street amused.”

A group of business owners including Barry Disdel and Sam Crane have been organising convoys to nearby hospitals to show their appreciation for the work they do.

As previously reported, they’ve been delivering masks too thanks to donations.

Last Thursday’s was a special the convoy visited Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital where Barry’s daughter Samantha Disdel works.

And her grandad Dennis Pearson joined them having been helped beat COVID-19 by the staff there.

Instead of masks, this time £800 was raised through the businesses which helped create gifts for the hospital staff including chocolates, sweets and toiletries.

Dennis himself donated money that went towards the goodies.

Barry said: “It was a brilliant moment.

“We wanted to say to the staff there that they do an absolutely brilliant job.

“They all really appreciated the gifts and I was tagged in pictures on Facebook later they’d sent of the nurses tucking into the chocolates.

“These events have brought a lot of us together and we’re going to keep doing fundraising events in the near future, not just for the hospitals but also for things like the Air Ambulance.

“We’re planning an event to be held in Holbeach some time where we’ll all get together again and raise money for the charities.

“It’s nice that out of something so bad, something really good has come of it.”
