Death of man found in Spalding waterway ‘unexplained’

UPDATE  Tuesday, 12.57pm:

Police have confirmed that the death of a man whose body was recovered from Vernatt’s Drain, Spalding, is not being treated as suspicious.

The 41-year-old, who cannot be named until his extended family has been informed, was discovered on Sunday.

The man, a foreign national who had been living in Spalding, had been missing from his home since January 14.

A dogwalker spotted the man’s body in the water close to the Pinchbeck Road bridge shortly after 2pm on Sunday.

Lincolnshire Police’s Underwater Search Unit recovered the body from the water and a police presence remained in the area into Monday as enquiries were completed.

 

Police say the death of a man found in Vernatt’s Drain, Spalding, is “unexplained”.

The body was spotted by a dog walker near the bridge in Pinchbeck Road at about 2pm on Sunday. It was recovered by Lincolnshire Police’s underwater search unit.

Police had earlier issued a plea for help in tracing a missing man and their enquiries continue.

Det Insp Suzanne Davies said on Sunday: “A scene guard is in place, limiting public access to the area, and further work at the location will continue in daylight hours.

“I am appealing to any dog walkers or [other] members of the public who have walked the drain recently, and who may have information to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 210 of 25th January.”

A post mortem examination will take place on Monday.
