Cricket round-up: Spalding Town stay on track for title as Harrox defeated in derby

Spalding Town remain in the box seat for the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division title after a comprehensive derby win over Moulton Harrox on Saturday.

Town, who are second in the table with a game in hand, picked up 20 points by handing hosts Harrox a six-wicket success at Broad Lane.

Moulton won the toss and opted to bat, but were bowled out by Spalding for just 118 in 41.5 overs.

The away reply was emphatic, with Town racing to a winning score of 119-4 to keep their title tilt very much on track.

Indeed, they are 18 points behind leaders Skegness having played one game more with just four games for Spalding left this season.

Saturday sees Town host Market Deeping 2nd, while Skegness are at home to Woodhall Spa 2nd (both 12.30pm).

Harrox, meanwhile, find themselves tenth in the 11-team division with four matches to play.

Also in the top tier, Long Sutton came up just short in a run chase against Freiston at Paradise Field on Saturday.

Freiston were bowled out for 181 in 37 overs batting first, before Sutton were dismissed for 173 in 42.2 overs in reply.

That leaves them sixth in the standings with four games remaining.

Down in Division One, Spalding Town 2nd suffered a hefty 111-run defeat against big-hitters Billingborough at Seas End Hall.

Runs from Dave Newman (34), Paul Goodwin (74 not out) and Robert Arnold (57) helped Boro score 221-7 from their 45 overs, but a great bowling performance from Thomas Decamps (4-32) did give them plenty to think about.

In reply, a number of Spalding players contributed but nobody managed to go on and make a big score.

Will Gardner (27), George Morris (21), Nigel Gardner (16) and Mohammad Alam (14) all made good starts, but they ultimately got out just as they had played themselves in.

With Callum Scott taking 5-31, Spalding were eventually all out for a valiant 110 in 44.1 overs.

Spalding’s second string sit one off the bottom following the defeat.
