Council left to clear up travellers’ car park mess

Travellers who set up camp on council-owned land have moved on, leaving the council to clear up the mess.

About 20 caravans parked up on land at Winfrey Avenue and King’s Road on Thursday.

They left again sometime between Sunday and Monday morning.

A spokesman for South Holland District Council said: “We can confirm that a number of travellers set up camp on council-owned land in King’s Road, Spalding, on Thursday and left the site sometime between Sunday and Monday morning.

“Officers visited the site and monitored the situation throughout.”

The spokesman confirmed that council employees cleaned up the site once the travellers had left and said the work was picked up as part of service operations, so there was no additional cost.

Rumours circulating on Facebook that the caravans were part of a caravan club which had prior permission to park on the land, have been refuted by the council.

The spokesman added: “The area of car park occupied near the bus station is, to the best of our knowledge, not a pay and display car park, so no tickets were issued.”
