Council backs leasing of sports ground

South Holland District Council has unanimously agreed to give a long-term lease for the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

It follows a recommendation made by a task group set up by the council to look at the land given to the people of Spalding to use.
The council says anybody can apply to take on the licence, though it’s likely Spalding United FC, who have played at the game for decades, are the front runners as they look to make the ground viable to meet possible future ground requirements.
It was voted through unanimously at South Holland District Council’s meeting last week.
Coun Paul Redgate said: “In order to progress the site it’s in the best interest for a more secured tenancy by an individual or group on the site.
“This will allow access to things such as funds and grants which will enable the ground to be upgraded and improved.
“It’s for the lease holder to operate it for the good of South Holland, not just Spalding.
“That’s even though it’s for the people of Spalding and for the community as a whole, so we’re not forgetting the reason why it was left to us.”
