Concern over fly-tipping

Two councillors have called for more to be done on fly-tipping and the early presentation of waste in their Spalding ward after feeling their calls were ‘falling on deaf ears’.

Coun James Le Sage and Manzur Hasan said in a statement ‘the ongoing issue of fly-tipping and early presentation of rubbish in the St Johns ward has reached a critical point’.
The pair claim there’s been a ‘dramatic increase’
“Fly-tipping is not just an eyesore, it’s a serious issue that has a direct effect on the quality of life for residents,” said Coun Hasan. “We need swift and effective action to not only clean up the existing waste but also to prevent further occurrences. “
Le Sage added: “We have asked in Full Council for action to be taken a number of times but it seems to fall on deaf ears.
“We are calling on the council to implement stronger enforcement measures and to explore solutions that will deter people from dumping waste illegally not only in the St Johns ward but also the whole of the SHDC area.
“We have suggested several measures including increased surveillance, harsher penalties for offenders and more frequent patrols and collections in hotspot areas.
“We also encourage residents to report any fly tipping or waste issues.
“We are committed to working closely with the council and the community to find a sustainable solution to the issue and are urging the council to bolster their response to try and bring a dramatic reduction of incidents of the problem.
“I feel for the Wombles of Spalding Common who do such a great job, it’s no wonder some of them are feeling disheartened about what they do as it seems an uphill struggle to keep on top of the issue.”
A spokesperson for South Holland District Council said: “We are aware of concerns regarding fly-tipping in the Spalding St John’s area. In response, our enforcement officers have increased patrols and will take appropriate action where necessary.
“We would like to remind all residents that it is their responsibility to dispose of waste responsibly. Waste and recycling should be presented for collection at the property’s curtilage by 6am on the scheduled collection day, but no earlier than 6pm the evening before.”
