Holbeach might not be able to join others in the country in lighting beacons to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, its parish council says.
On May 8, towns and villages across the UK are due to light their beacons at 9.30pm to mark Victory in Europe Day and 80 years since the end of World War Two on the continent.
As an authority with a beacon, Holbeach would usually join others in lighting it.
But the parish council says its been told they can’t by South Holland District Council which owns the land it is on.
Holbeach Parish Council has said it will still put on a event involving lamp lighting, but it won’t involve lighting the beacon itself.
A spokesman for the authority said: “As it stands, the beacon is not in a fit state to be lit.
“We are liaising with SHDC however, it is apparent that it will not be ready in time for May 8.
“With this in mind, the Events and PR Committee is organising an event in Carter’s Park for May 8 from 5pm to 10pm.
“We will mark the occasion with lighting lamps of peace at 9.30pm.
“More details will follow.”
The Voice asked South Holland District Council what plans had been made to fix the beacon.
A spokesman said: “The beacon is situated on SHDC land.
“There are no concerns about the beacon’s structural safety, however, as we have received an enquiry about it we will reinspect accordingly.”
