A Spalding farmer who has raised a record amount for a charity from a marathon run handed over a huge cheque.
Ben Smith raised £18,811 to Blood Cancer UK at a special event held at Trent Bridge.
He was the highest fundraiser who ran the London Marathon for the charity last year.
His friend Steve LeMottee was diagnosed with the condition in 2023. He has myeloma, a treatable but not curable blood cancer.
He volunteers at Trent Bridge which was chosen as the venue.
“Steve is an incredible man who has taken his diagnosis head on. I was so proud to have run the marathon for Steve and beat the drum about blood cancer,” said Ben.
Myeloma affects plasma cells which are made inside bone marrow. It is a blood cancer that follows a relapsing-remitting pattern.
People generally have treatment followed by a period of remission, which is always almost followed by a relapse.
“Blood cancer is the UK’s fifth most common cancer, and we are deeply grateful for his determination and the support of everyone who contributed to Ben’s fundraising,” said Rachel Mann-Bradbury, fundraising manager for the charity.
