A memorial and a new group has been formed for those seeking friendship in memory of a man who found solace with Spalding pub regulars.
Local charities and support groups will be getting involved in the weekly sessions in memory of Angus McPherson at The Ivy Wall public house every Wednesday, January 15 between 9am and 1pm.
A plaque in his honour has been put up in the JD Wetherspoon-owned establishment.
The Angus McPherson Wind Back Wednesdays is the idea of district councillor Mark Le Sage who knew the 70-year-old who died in October.
“The idea is that for those people who find themselves on their own for whatever reason can have the opportunity to meet up with people in a similar situation and to find out about what support and help is available within the local community,” Coun Le Sage said.
A former PE teacher, Angus had two children and three grandchildren with wife Jackie.
“Angus struggled with anxiety and illness and got to a point where he had to do something,” she said. “He went to Wetherspoons because it was open and seemed friendly. He found so many like him there and he became firm friends with them.”
The group named themselves ‘The Old Gits Ivy Wall Love Club’ and have acted as a support group for each other.
Now, being led by Coum Le Sage alongside local groups, anyone can attend the Angus McPherson Wind Back Wednesdays but are asked to take a photo of themselves from when they were younger to kick-start the conversation.
“It’s amazing and wonderful to see Angus live on like this,” Jackie said. “I never thought he’d spark something like this.
“It’s beautiful for me and the children to see their ‘papa’ live on.”
