Captain John leads Sutton to top spot

Long Sutton moved top of Division One South of the Lincolnshire Premier League thanks to a five-wicket win against Market Deeping Seconds in the only local league game to beat the weather.

After winning the toss and inserting their visitors, Sutton enjoyed early success with the first three wickets to fall yielding only eight runs. Frugal Tim Norris took 2-11 from his nine overs, including six maidens.

Lester Sainsbury (51no) and Richard Pickering (36) slowed home progress, with an unbeaten 32 from captain David Gillett helping Deeping to 147/4 from their 45 overs.

Sutton also made a slow start in their reply, with openers Rajan Sangha and Norris scoring just five between them.

Captain Aron John steadied things with 50, joining Dan Oldfield (48no) in what proved to be a match-winning stand as the hosts made swift progress to 149/5 in the 32nd over.

Moulton Harrox enjoyed a comfortable victory in Division Four of the Rutland League.

After being asked to bat first, the visitors lost Lewis Peak for a single before Jamie Parrish (31) and Liam Barwick (21) moved the score on to 58/1.

Ruari Drumm then added 42 in a 49-run stand with Barwick, before captain Harry Lovell came in to score a rapid 63 from 32 balls before retiring not out.

Harry Earth (19no) and Jotham Suwarneraj (13no) completed the innings at 219/6.

Kettering were never in the hunt for victory and their 40-over innings petered out on 100/6, with Moulton giving all but Jamie Parrish the chance to bowl, with six of the 10 bowlers claiming a wicket.

Sethmina Adhikaramge was the pick, bowling four maidens in his six-over 1-3.

Luke Barwick (72no) and captain Ali Drohan (41) led the recovery as Long Sutton Mallards climbed up to second place in the Mid-Norfolk Sunday League’s Kevin Grimmer Division.

They beat Grimston Lions by 52 runs after initially struggling when asked to bat.

The visitors enjoyed early success with the ball to reduce Sutton to 13/2 and 47/3 before Barwick and Drohan were united at 68/4. They guided their team to 155/4 and the visitors went on to reach 203/6 from their 40 overs.

Vijay Karavadara tore into the visitors’ batting in the second innings, taking 3-8 to reduce them to 5/3. Ellis Redden (4-39) enjoyed similar as the hosts collapsed to 18/5.

However, hopes of a lightning quick finish were denied by opener Liam Woodcock. The captain hit 76 and shared a 96-run sixth-wicket stand with Ben Taylor-Bunting (40).

Once that partnership was broken, wickets fell swiftly again and Grimston were all out for 151 to leave Sutton 52-run victors.
