Call for political parties to stand in South Holland election

A Conservative district councillor is calling on the other big political parties to put forward candidates for next year’s election to give voters a choice.

South Holland District Council is made up of 37 councillors – 25 Conservative and 12 independents, but not a single Labour or Liberal Democrat candidate.

Conservative member Rodney Grocock, who represents Moulton, Moulton Chapel, Moulton Seas End, Weston, Weston Hills and Cowbit, believes that is a situation which should be rectified at the district council election in May 2015.

Mr Grocock said: “What I don’t understand is why Labour and Lib Dem political parties never put up a candidate to stand in local elections.

“If you are a Labour or Lib Dem supporter and because nobody is standing wearing these colours, then who do you vote for?

“I understand that in certain circumstances some candidates stand for office on a particular subject.

“For example, in Boston people stood for the Boston Bypass, so they would have to stand as independent candidates.

“I get that, but why are the good people of South Holland not given the opportunity to vote for the other main political parties?

“In my opinion this is very wrong.

“It must be very frustrating for a staunch Labour voter to have no-one to vote for.

“May 2015 is a very special date – not only are the present South Holland district councillors coming up for re-election, it is also a General Election.

“So, I do hope that all political parties give the voters of South Holland a choice.”

Mr Grocock is also asking that the main political parties put forward a candidate to oppose MP John Hayes in his South Holland and the Deepings constituency.

He has asked for voters’ feedback on the subject.
