A butchers with 127 years of history in South Holland behind them is to close.
Bennett Butchers, currently on Winsover Road in Spalding, will close its doors on November 28.
Partner Andrew Parsons made the announcement on Sunday alongside a picture from 1910 of his great grandfather Henry Bennett’s former store on London Road in the town.
Andrew said: “After 127 years of trading in Spalding, it is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the closure of Bennett Butchers. Our last day of trading will be November 28.
“This is primarily due to increasing energy costs and changes to the employers national insurance, coupled with the struggling hospitality sector.
“I would like to thank all our loyal customers for their support over many years and also thank my wonderful staff for their dedication and hard work.”
A number of regular customers expressed their sadness at the closure, particularly over the loss of the Brownings sausages that Bennett was known for.
Among those who expressed their sadness were W Hargrave and Sons butchers in Pinchbeck.
“After 127 years of trading, this really is the end of an era for Spalding,” their comment said. “Although we’ve been competitors over the years, we’ve always had a great relationship and nothing but mutual respect.
“It’s a real shame to see another independent family butcher close its doors, especially one with so much history.
“From all of us at W Hargrave & Son, we’d like to wish Andrew and all the team the very best for the future.
“You’ve certainly done Spalding proud.”
Earlier this month the Spalding and East Elloe Butchers’ Association held its last meeting with them saying at the time it was due to there only being Holbeach’s Shearer and Son’s butchers alongside Bennett’s left in the organisation.
A spokesman for Shearer’s said: “Our families have been friends for decades, both in business and socially and we’ve shared so many memories.
“We have always helped each other out, especially during the busy Christmas period.
“You have worked so hard over the years and you deserve to finally put your feet up and enjoy some well earned time to yourself…although we know who to call when we are completely desperate for help!
“Wishing you all the very best for whatever comes next.”
