Burton gets Sleaford 2nd in a spin as Long Sutton ease to victory and stay fourth

Spinner Jake Burton took five wickets as Long Sutton 1st enjoyed a five-wicket win at Sleaford 2nd on Saturday.

Sutton stay fourth in the South Lincs and Border League Division One table after the victory and are now just 16 points behind leaders Grantham 2nd.

Hosts Sleaford won the toss and opted to bat first, but found themselves bowled out for just 122 in 32.3 overs with Burton to the fore.

Sutton needed only 26.2 overs to reach their target, Paul Edgeller (39 not out) top scoring in their 123-5.

Batting first, Sleaford’s second string actually made a great start with Sam Burrows (60) and Ian Glendinning (22) putting on 51 before the latter was bowled by Edgeller (1-40).

Barry Stanway (2-43) then joined the party as he caught Jake Henderson (2) LBW and bowled Neill Henderson (0) for a three-ball duck.

Ben Glendinning (10) was next to go as Burton got his first wicket, then Dylan Chessum (1) was bowled by Charlie Crisp (2-16). Next to go was Burrows, bowled by the spin of Burton – and that triggered a collapse.

They fell from 109-5 to 122 all out, with Burton blitzing the tail.

In reply, Adam Wright (1) was out early on to leave Sutton 1-1. Calvin Bird (30) and Dan Oldfield (22) eased any concerns the visitors may have had of a tricky chase, though.

Chessum (1-22) bowled Oldfield and Jake Henderson (1-31) knocked over Tim Norris (4) to put the skids on Sutton, but they held firm.

Oldfield joined Bird at the crase and the pair took the team total to 71-4 before Bird was out caught and bowled to Max Lorimer (1-12).

Edward Barnes (15) proved a trusty partner for Oldfield in the run chase and, although Burrows (1-30) bowled him, the damage was already done and Sutton eased to their target in the 27th over.

Next up for Sutton is a home date against Market Deeping on Saturday (1pm).
