‘Bring back the bloom’ idea grows

A plan to get South Holland towns and villages famous for their floral displays again has shoots of growth.

The idea to enter both Spalding and Pinchbeck into the East Midlands In Bloom competitions is being closely looked at.

Representatives from both areas have joined Crowland, Deeping St Nicholas and, the only location in the district to actually enter this year, Long Sutton, on the South Holland In Bloom board.

Jan Whitbourn is the representative for Spalding but said getting the town ready to enter the In Bloom competition again would take time and more volunteers.

“What we’ve said is that we’re going to try and get the project going and build it up towards an application,” she said. “We are trying to do it for next year.”

Jan, currently chairman of South Holland District Council, has been involved with brightening up the railway station for several years now, and a first small donation will go towards new flower pots outside the building.

She also says she’s working with different groups and businesses on other bloom projects on the town.

Elizabeth Sneath, also a district councillor, is the representative for Pinchbeck and says the village is hopeful of entering In Bloom next year.

Both are taking part as individuals, not representing the district council.

“I’ve suggested it to the parish council and it’s something we’re looking at,” she said. “We want to beautify the village; tidy up some of the areas that need it to accentuate it.

“We’re looking at more planters rather than hanging basket, but it’s something we’re working on to potentially enter next year.”

South Holland in Bloom secretary Sue Cooper, who has been on the board for more than 30 years, says it’s great that it is getting more members after a huge drop in interest in the district.

“It used to be an awful lot busier,” she said. “Both Crowland and Deeping St Nicholas are also working with us.

“It’s disappointing, but the at the end of the day you need volunteers. You only have to look at Holbeach where everyone criticised because the blooms stopped after the volunteers stepped down.

“Deeping St Nicholas has some very good volunteers and blooms are going from strength to strength there.

“If there is anyone from any town, village or hamlet interested in joining our very informal meetings, they’re always welcome.

“There’s a lot of good work going on and we like to share ideas with each other.”
