Boss Roberts left disappointed as Holbeach United crash to Wisbech Town defeat

Wisbech Town 2
Holbeach United 1

Tom Roberts couldn’t hide his disappointment after seeing his Holbeach United side beaten 2-1 at Wisbech Town on Tuesday night.

Goals from Stuart Cobb (11) and Danny Beaumont (32) put hosts Wisbech 2-0 to the good, but Oli Donald’s first Holbeach goal (33) made it 2-1 soon after.

Andrew Tidswell rattled the bar with a trademark free kick on the hour, but the Tigers were unable to find a leveller as they slipped to a fourth league loss on the spin.

Things could have looked a bit different if Scott Johnson had been sent off for bringing down Dan Woods when he was clean through on goal (62) – but he escaped with a yellow card.

Tigers defender Stacy Cartwright wasn’t so lucky, as he was shown a second yellow card in the dying seconds to round off a miserable night.

“It was a very scrappy game,” admitted Tigers player/boss Roberts. “I don’t think we deserved to lose.

“They had a good 15 minute spell in the first half, but other than that I felt we were the better side. We were camped in their half in the second period, but couldn’t find a breakthrough.

“It’s disappointing, as I don’t think we lost to a strong Wisbech side.

“You can see they have a few problems, but we couldn’t capitalise.

“To make matters worse, Stacy went and got a stupid second yellow card at the end.

“Yes, we’ve played a lot of games lately – but some of the players do need to do more.”

Holbeach expect to ring the changes for Thursday’s trip to Rothwell Corinthians (7.45pm).

That will be their third game in six days – and the matches don’t stop there. Newport Pagnell are the visitors to Carter’s Park on Saturday (3pm), then the Tigers visit leaders Leicester Nirvana on Tuesday (8pm).

Tigers: Emery, Donald, N Jackson, Cartwright, Stevens, A Jackson, Warfield, Eyett (Gale), Woods, Tidswell, Ford. Not used: Roberts, Clitheroe, Ward, Dougill.

Attendance: 154.
