A Spalding man says he has been inundated with offers of help after pledging to bring back an event similar to the town’s former Flower Parade.
Steve Timewell has already had conversations with the likes of South Holland District Council after a social media post at the weekend about a lack of celebrations in the town received hundreds of comments and interactions.
Now he’s looking to run something on Saturday, May 6, centred around the Sir Halley Stewart, possibly involving a parade from Spalding Grammar School.
Steve says the parade would be more like the Notting Hill Carnival and came about as he was bored sitting at home this weekend.
“I started off putting a couple of posts up and within an hour I had over 400 people wanting to get involved,” said Steve who lives in West Pinchbeck with wife Sandra.
“You can just see the community spirit is there and that’s why I think we can pull this off.
“I don’t want to go back to the midsts of time. I don’t think you can get around 50 floats of tulips as I don’t think there’s enough around here now.
“There will be some nostalgia but I’d like it to be something like the Notting Hill Carnival with all of the community groups involved and the area being full of colour and sounds.
“I’ve spoken with SHDC leader Gary Porter and he says although the council can’t put on the event, they will give us every support they can.
“We need to speak to Lincolnshire Police about the costing of policing the event and insurance as I understand that’s why the Flower Parade ended in the first place.”
Steve says members of the old organising committee had offered to get involved along with around seven schools.
He’s now planning an open meeting for those interested, probably to be held at The Sir Halley Stewart.
“I’m really excited,” he said.
