Bid for action on town ‘rat run’

Residents of a Holbeach town street have asked for traffic measures to be put in place as they say it is being used as both a ‘rat run’ and place for parking.

Julia Stanbridge and Mark Petchell, both of Edinburgh Walk, attended the most recent meeting of Holbeach Parish Council to raise concerns.
They told councillors about vehicles speeding on the route to avoid High Street and Park Road alongside cars they claimed were parked illegally.
Julia asked for traffic calming or a one way system be put in place.
“There’s a volume of traffic using the road as a rat run to avoid the traffic lights,” she said. “There’s constant speeding down there while vehicles are parking where they shouldn’t.”
Mark added: “We also get articulated lorries going down when there should be a weight restrictions.
“It’s a car park from 7.30am to 6pm for the people who won’t pay to park in town.
“Some people struggle to get in and out of their own driveways.
“Nothing is done about illegal parking.
“We had a large tractor that was parked halfway on the path and halfway on the road down there only yards from the police station.”
The parish council vowed to take the matters to Lincolnshire County Council which is the authority responsible for highways.
Coun Sophie Hutchinson said that Lincolnshire County Council’s traffic officers dealt with illegal parking of vehicles while police dealt with parking issues if it was blocking access.
A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council, said that the authority responsible for highways had not been spoken to about an issue in the area or a need for parking measures.
