Battery Boxes to boost the power

Battery boxes to reinforce power supplies are set to be installed in Spalding.

The boxes take up approximately the same size as two car parking spaces and can be used to store energy which is tapped into at times of peak demand.
The applications have been submitted by Amp Clean Energy and would see the new boxes installed at Parkside Crescent and on the south side of Holbeach Road in Spalding.
Referred to as an Energy Storage System (ESS), the battery boxes are being developed across the country to help supply sufficient electricity.
“It imports electricity from the local network when demand is low, or when there are high levels of renewable energy available.
“It then exports that electricity back to the grid when required in periods of high demand. This provides a solution to the growing need for flexibility and helps address concerns regarding grid reliability,” says a document accompanying an application to South Holland District Council.
The electricity system in this country has been dominated by a small number of large power stations run on fossil fuel.
Each Battery Box will help to bolster the network rather than turn on a fossil fuel power plant.
“ESSs can provide services to both National Grid and Distribution Network Operators who operate the local electricity networks,” says the supporting document.
The application also says it reduces carbon emissions, with Amp Clean Energy estimating one box would save 160 tonnes of CO2 each year.
Each Battery Box will power around 200 homes for two hours, connecting at low voltage.
“There is expected to be a significant growth in demand for electricity over the coming years owing to the electrification of heat and transport with wider take up of heat pumps and electric vehicles.”
Both applications will be decided by South Holland District Council.
