Food manufacturer Bakkavor has teamed up with Spalding-based health and wellbeing charity Tonic Health to promote healthy eating among local schoolchildren.
An educational workshop for children aged between 5 and 12 on the importance of fruit and salads for a healthy diet was led by Sam Hetherington, development chef at Bakkavor Salads in Spalding.
The workshop at Tonic Health’s base at Broadgate House in Westlode Street on Tuesday (January 10) highlighted the nutritional benefits of fruit and salads via hands-on activities such as making fruit skewers and baking sugar-free sponge cake.
The workshop formed part of Tonic Health’s GEM Kids (Growing, Eating, Moving) programme. Supported by local government, this 12-week programme provides primary school children with exercise, diet and nutritional advice.
Sam said: “This is a fantastic local initiative which we are delighted to be supporting.
“It was great to get the children involved in the making and preparation of nutritious foods, and we hope to have helped instil in them at an early age the skills required to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
Given the success of the workshop, there will also be a further session on Tuesday, February 7, focused on breads and wraps.
