A Holbeach fundraiser has launched an appeal after she was shocked to find an item she was selling turned out to be an urn containing ashes.
For the past two years Ann Gregory has sold items at her Boston Road South home to raise money for Jerry Green Dog Rescue.
But one tear-shaped item that’s been on sale for several months for £4 had a valuable secret – what appears to be the ashes of someone’s relative or pet.
“I had a customer in on Monday and she looked at the item and said ‘oh my God that looks just like the urn that had my dad’s ashes in’,” Ann said. “It wasn’t her dad’s, but we took it down, it’s heavy and sealed at the bottom and makes a noise when it shakes, just like her dad’s.
“It’s designed for ashes, the gold colour is meant to represent the eternal flame, it sounds like ashes inside and all sealed up at the bottom.
“I don’t really want to open it.
“It’s now off sale and in our home so I’m treating it with the respect it deserves.
“I now really want to return it to its rightful owners and family.
“I’m sure it’s been donated by accident.”
Ann, who has raised over £28,000 for the dog charity in the last few years, can remember unpacking the box it was included in, but can’t remember anything about the person who donated it.
“I’ve had it a few months now without knowing what it is,” she said. “All I can recall is it was at the bottom of a box of mixed items.
“There’s no name or date on it, no signatures, nothing.”
