Sutton Bridge Golf Club enjoyed a scorching Bank Holiday Monday as 16 teams battled soaring temperatures of around 32°C in the club’s popular scramble competition — but it was a remarkable hole-in-one that stole the headlines.
Players faced blistering heat, with the course presented in superb condition as competitors took on the challenging layout.
Taking top honours in the team event were Paul Davis, Daniel Wenner and Brayden Butler, who secured first place after an impressive round in difficult conditions.
Finishing runners-up were Adam Crane, Ronnie Clayton and Reece Ayres, while Andy Cook, Shaun Doughty and Ben Wenham claimed third place. Fourth spot went to Bailey Took, Richard Garrnet and Thomas Boar.
Special prizes for nearest the pin were awarded to Brayden Butler on the 2nd hole and Ben Wenham on the 15th, while Jimmy Pack, Adrian Johnson and Martyn Johnson claimed the “16th in two” prize.
However, the standout moment of the day came from Davis, who produced what many are describing as one of the most extraordinary shots ever witnessed at Sutton Bridge Golf Club.
Davis aced the par-four 3rd hole – measuring around 306 yards – with a sensational hole-in-one that saw his tee shot travel across the dock basin, over the dock wall and straight into the cup.
Members believe the feat has only been achieved once before in the club’s history, by life member Kevin Howling around 25 years ago.
The achievement sparked celebrations around the clubhouse and capped off what organisers described as another brilliant day “down the bridge”, combining competitive golf, great company and plenty of sun cream.
Martyn Johnson, from the club, thanked everyone who took part and helped make the event such a success, praising both the quality of golf on display and the community spirit throughout the day.
