All aboard with Spalding Sea Cadets

A new unit of a youth group is seeking hands on deck.

The Spalding Sea Cadets are set to officially launch this year for ten to 18-year-olds.

Like the army and air cadets, the charity provides a host of opportunities for young people but with a more naval theme.

The new Spalding unit will be a satellite branch of 602 of the Sea Cadet Corps (Boston).

Its experienced volunteers are overseeing the launch and inviting anyone who is interested to an open evening at 7pm on Friday, January 30 at Spalding United Reform Church on Pinchbeck Road.

The group will meet on Friday evenings at The Cadet Hut at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding.

Petty Officer Jenny Harvey, the commanding officer of Boston Sea Cadets, said: “We have been asked to set up a satellite unit in Spalding so we can offer the young people of Spalding and surrounding areas the chance to learn life and team building skills.

“Our aim is to offer a wide range of activities and courses from first aid, campcraft, Duke of Edinburgh, BTEC to Royal Yachting qualifications and British Canoe Kayaking and rowing qualifications.

“Being a part of the Sea Cadets, gives young people a new perspective. We broaden horizons and create possibilities.

“Working across the UK with 14,000 young people between ten and 18, we help them see the world with confidence, gained through the challenge of nautical adventure and a Royal Navy ethos.

“Our aim is to help more young people to see the future that they want – and make that future happen.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to get to know other young people in the area and make some great friends and learn new skills that will give cadets a great head start in life and boast their confidence.”

Young people from Spalding the surrounding areas are invited to join the new unit.

There’s two age groups with Junior Sea Cadets for those aged from ten to 12 with Sea Cadets for 12 to 18-year-olds.

The event on January 30 will see Boston Sea Cadets give a presentation on their experiences and able to answer any questions.

There’s also a plea for volunteers to come forward to help with Spalding Sea Cadets.

A spokesman said: “You do not need any qualifications or need to know about the Navy, just enthusiasm and a keenness to learn new skills.

“We have a variety of roles, not just instructor roles, and will meet on Friday evenings throughout the year.”
