Appeal over Spalding based fraud probe

Hundreds of potential fraud victims are being asked to come forward amid an investigation into a Spalding-based lottery syndicate.

A specialist investigation team has been assigned to what the police are calling Operation Safeway, which is investigating the The Lottery Syndicate Club.

As we reported in November, Lincolnshire Police believe the suspected fraud has affected ‘several hundred’ people.

And investigating officers from the specialist Economic Crime Unit are looking to speak to anyone who may have had dealings with the The Lottery Syndicate Club which is listed with Companies House as being based at The Crescent in Spalding.

The company’s accounts are currently overdue but the business remains listed as active.

Its sole listed director is Christopher Toynton, a former chairman of Spalding United Football Club, who was previously a director of listed companies Spalding Football Limited and Spalding United Football Club Limited, both of which have been dissolved.

From February 2019 until last month he’d also been the director of a company called Spalding Spread Bet Ltd.

The only organisation thought to be under investigation as part of Operation Safeway is The Lottery Syndicate Club.

Police would like to hear from anybody involved with the syndicate.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police told The Voice: “Officers in the Economic Crime Unit at Lincolnshire Police are continuing to investigate suspected fraud connected to The Lottery Syndicate Club Ltd in Spalding.

“Enquiries indicate that this has affected several hundred people and Lincolnshire Police would encourage anyone with relevant information to contact the dedicated investigation team by email: opsafeway@lincs.pnn.police.uk”.
