Football club hit by fire at ground

There could be no festive football at Holbeach United this Christmas after a fire damaged the away changing rooms on Saturday.

The Carter’s Park club’s reserves were due to play there on Saturday, but at 9.50am machinery on fire was reported to Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue.

A spokesman for Holbeach Parish Council said it was believed the fire was started by a faulty chord on an electrical appliance, however Fire and Rescue have said the cause is ‘unknown’.

The council also doesn’t know when the changing rooms will again be back and ready to use as they’re waiting on contractors.

Holbeach United’s 1st XI were due to host Boston Town in the United Counties League this Saturday, but that game is postponed and it’s not clear when they’ll be able to plat at home again.

Holbeach United manager Danny Hussey said: “Obviously it’s not ideal that we can no longer host fixtures..

“We don’t own the changing rooms but some of the property in there was ours.

“At this stage it’s hard to know the extent of the damage, we’re waiting for the health and safety advisers and insurance people to have a look.

“We’re just hopeful that things get sorted and that we’re able to host games again soon.”

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said the fire had self-extinguished by the time they attended.
