Hussey angered by ‘awful’ Holbeach United showing in drab Desborough draw

Danny Hussey branded Holbeach United’s performance “awful” as they were held to a Carter’s Park draw by lowly Desborough Town on Saturday.

Josh Ford’s first-half free-kick gave the Tigers the lead at the break, but they were pegged back by Brian Farrell’s long punt upfield that caught keeper Ricky Drury out and found the net.

Considering Desborough lost 12-0 at Rugby Town in their previous game, Uhlsport UCL Premier high-fliers Holbeach were huge favourites to keep their winning run going.

But boss Hussey admits that his side were fortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw that extends their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions.

“It was an awful performance,” said the Tigers chief. “We were just so poor.

“I think the lads looked at the 12-0 result for Desborough and felt they just had to turn up, put their boots on and they’d win the game.

“I wanted us to use that fear Desborough might have had that it could happen again, start well and get on top of them.

“But the exact opposite happened and they were stronger in absolutely every department on the day.

“I’ll pull no punches when my team are bad – we barely deserved a draw, let alone three points. Credit to them, they were the better side.

“We just weren’t effective at all, which is a shame but it can happen to any team.

“It’s all about how we respond to this result moving forward.”

Holbeach had broken the deadlock on 36 minutes amid foggy conditions when Ford’s free-kick from 20 yards flew into the corner.

However, the leveller came 15 minutes from time when Farrell’s hopeful kick upfield wreaked havoc and somehow managed to find the back of the net.

The draw sees Holbeach’s run of four wins on the spin come to an end.

Tigers: Drury, Braithwaite, T Smith, N Jackson, Fairweather, A Jackson, Avis (Wilson 70), Tinkler, Ford, Bird (Lockie 64), Adams. Not used: Gadsden, Nicholson, Lovelace.
