Dunn pays tribute to champions Daventry but rues Pinchbeck United’s missed chances

Pinchbeck United were unable to stop Daventy Town clinching the Future Lions UCL Premier Division title on Saturday – but held the new champions to a creditable draw.

The Knights fell behind to a strike from Sam Jackson midway through the first half at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, but Alex Beck’s 46th-minute leveller was the very least that they deserved.

Pinchbeck player/boss Ian Dunn paid tribute to Daventry after the whistle, but felt that his side did enough to take all three points.

“Firstly, I have to say congratulations to Arron and his team,” said Dunn. “They’ve won the league for a reason as they’ve been the best team over the course of the season.

“That being said, I think we probably edged the game – certainly on chances created.

“We created more than them in the first half and the goal probably came against the run of play.

“It was a bit frustrating really, being we came out quick in the second half and scored very early – which was good. We then had another good chance and overall I thought we edged it.

“However, it was another one of those games this season when we’ve been unable to turn a draw into a victory.

“We asked Ollie (Maltby) to play a bit higher up the pitch in the second half and to try and gamble a bit. He won the flick on for the goal and it felt like that change had an instant impact.

“We had a few missing so we had Tyler Wright back in the squad. He decided to leave Wisbech Town for one reason or another and was available, so he’s going to be involved until the end of the season.

“He did us a big favour helping us out”

Knights: Gorman, Wilson, Cartwright, Ross (Jackson 72), Field, Vince, Beeson, Maltby, Nuttell (Dunn 75), Beck, West (Wright 65). Not used: Lovelace.
