Spalding Bowls Club knocked out of Top Club tournament

Spalding Bowls Club’s mixed team were ousted from England Bowls’ Top Club national tournament by Hornsea on Sunday.

The match was played on the neutral ground at Louth Indoor Bowls Club.
Hornsea struck first with a win for England senior international skip, Danielle Martinson against Gloria Haney in the ladies singles however, this was soon reversed by Stephen Harris in the men’s singles.

With the Spalding triple creating a big lead, the aggregate was always safe, meaning that one win would have been enough in the pairs and fours.

Despite a bad start for the Spalding pairing of Tomlin and Orrey, they found themselves three shots up playing the last end and seemingly, the whole tie to be decided on the last end.

Only holding two shots with one bowl to play, the Hornsea skip ditched a bare jack to make five shots and secure their place in the next round where they will play Barwell or Nottingham on January 6.

Rink scores:-
Ladies Singles – Gloria Haney – Lost 15-21
Men’s Singles – Stephen Harris – Won 21-16
Pairs – Chelsea Tomlin and Mathew Orrey – Lost 17-19
Triples – Andy Dunham, Annie Dunham and Martin Spencer – Won 28-6
Fours – Danielle Wild, Julie Hicks, Jordan Philpott and Graham Smith – Lost 12-17

* In a competition that Lincolnshire won last year, nine of Spalding’s bowlers assisted in the Liberty Trophy with a comfortable second round win against Nottinghamshire, by 23 shots (139-116).

A match which saw Nottinghamshire start the stronger, this was soon turned around and the lead stayed between 20 and 30 shots until the end for the defending champions.

Lincolnshire will now play Durham in the national quarter final on January 12.
