Dunn full of praise as Pinchbeck United shoot down Star to end losing streak

Ryan Oliver marked his home debut with a typical goal as Pinchbeck United ended their three-game Future Lions UCL Premier Division losing streak in impressive style on Saturday.

Hitman Oliver headed the Knights into the lead against Peterborough Northern Star at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, before the recalled Tony Edwards completed a fine team move to round off the scoring before the break.

Having slipped to seventh in the table after successive defeats against Oadby Town, Rugby Town and Newport Pagnell Town, the 2-0 triumph moves Ian Dunn’s side back into the top four (before slipping to fifth on Tuesday night).

The player/boss was impressed with what he saw from his side against high-flying opposition and singled out debutant Nick Jackson for high praise following a flawless showing in defence.

“It was a very good performance,” admitted Dunn. “I never really felt like we were going to concede a goal all game.

“Nick Jackson came in and was exactly as good as we thought he’d be, which was a real boost.

“We looked very solid at the back and were dangerous going forward, so I have to be happy with the lads.

“I thought we also played some really good stuff. It took us a while to realise that we had the time to get the ball down and play, but once we got going it was easy on the eye.

“I think they sat off us a bit in the second half and tried to keep themselves in the game. They had a good go at us in the closing stages, but we held firm.

“We dealt with them well and, after the run we’ve had, it was very important that we won the game and kept a clean sheet.

“I don’t think any of us expected to lose three games in a row, but it has happened.

“This was much better and we just need to keep doing more of the same.

“I was pleased to see both Ryan and Tony get on the scoresheet, too.

“Both played very well in attack and you can’t ask any more than for your strikers to get goals.”
