Snooker and billiards: Welcome win boosts struggling Donington B

Donington B haven’t had much to cheer about in Spalding and District Snooker League Division Two this season – but that all changed on Thursday night.

The strugglers jumped off the bottom of the table by thrashing hosts Pyramid C 6-0 as they registered only their fourth win of the season so far.

Phil Burrell (R7), Pete Burrell (scr), Dave Banister (scr), Mick Clarke (R7) and Gav Lewis (O7) all enjoyed frame wins from jubilant Donington in Bourne.

That result means that Long Sutton C, who enjoyed such a strong start to the season, are now bottom after their 4-2 home defeat against Donington A.

Breaks of 32 and 28 from Thomas Horspool (O35) weren’t enough for the hosts, with Tony Scully (O21) sealing the win for Donington in the penultimate frame.

At the other end of the table, leaders Boundary C defeated Whittlesey C 5-1 to go three points clear.

A 27 clearance from Mick Walker (O35) and a narrow black-ball win from Shaun Ketteringham (O14) helped the Deepings side win well.

Behind them, second-placed Services C came a cropper 4-2 at home to Pyramid D.

James Sharpe’s (O35) 28 break and a final frame success from Pete Jackson (R7) helped see the Bourne boys home.

Also winning well were Services A, who saw off Consti H 5-1 despite a 20 break from Doug Garfoot (O21).

Up in Division One, leaders Holbeach A suffered a 5-1 home reverse against Tulips B. A cool 31 break from Mark Wilkinson (O14) and Darren Woodberry’s (O35) 22 clearance were the highlights in that one.

That allowed Services E to pull level at the top after they battled to a 4-2 success at Pyramid B.

In a game that saw Spencer Dawkins (O49) and Alfonso Palumbo (O49) bag breaks of 42 and 40 respectively for the Bourne side, Kev Emerson (R21) snatched the win for Services ain the final frame.

Fellow high-fliers Bourne SC A failed to capitalise, however, going down 5-1 at home to Holbeach D.

A 34 break from cue ace Mark Gray (O105) was their only highlight.

Elsewhere in the top tier, a 38 break from Sean Swinburn (O42) helped Long Sutton A beat Boundary B 4-2.

Down in Division Three, Consti I moved to within one point of the summit with a 4-2 victory at Gosberton C.

There were also some fine breaks on show – the best of which being a super 37 from Mark Lynch (O14) in Bourne SC B’s 4-2 victory at Gosberton B.

Jim Howe (O42) added a handsome 33 break for Crowland C, but they lost 4-2 at Whittlesey B – for who Garry Thewliss (scr) made a 20 break in the final frame.

Meanwhile, third-placed Pyramid E romped to a 5-1 victory at Donington D and Services B won by the same score at home to Consti A to move into the top five.

  • Two teams in Spalding and District Billiards League enjoyed healthy 7-0 wins on Monday night.

Gosberton B romped to a seven-point haul against Long Sutton in the most eye-catching result of the week.

A 54 break from Mick Cooper (O180) was in vain for Sutton, as Marcus Pell (O10), Shane White (O20) and James Waterfall (R50) all secured frame wins.

Pell, White and Waterfall also made breaks of 34, 23 and 41 respectively.

Also 7-0 winners were Donington, who had too much for Holbeach C.

Breaks of 24 and 20 from Ben Wrigglesworth (R50) and Jim Thompson (R50) helped them on their way, while Colin Dodd (R50) hit back with a 26 for Holbeach.

Meanwhile, it was much closer as rock-bottom Gosberton A enjoyed only their fourth win of the season.

They defeated Consti C 4-3, with Andy Shephard (R120) and Malc Dennis (R110) grabbing frame wins.

Stewart Davies (R30) and Alan Hansard (R70) did make breaks of 20 and 21 for Consti C, with the latter agonisingly beaten 200-199 by Dennis.

It was also 4-3 as Holbeach B edged out Pyramid A.

Denis Hix (R70) and Tony Blanchard (R50) were the Holbeach winners, with the latter edging home 200-199.
